Club News

Madison Walker is a special education teacher at Midlothian Heritage High School and a proud graduate of Texas A&M College Station.  She has taught self-contained special education classes since beginning, teaching our students with the highest educational support needs. When in Burleson ISD a couple of years ago, she started a coffee shop named Elk-spresso Coffee shop, where her students sold coffee and hot chocolate to the teachers. She also volunteers with Second Chance Dog Rescue.

Two of our 2025 RYLA Campers, Ethan from Midlothian High School and Olivia from Heritage High School, gave us a report on their experience at RYLA Camp in late May. They also fielded questions from our group. I think we all felt our money was well spent. After the presentation we gave a book to an elementary school library in each of their names. President John Piper shown making the presentations.

Commander Jason Medina gave a presentation about MPD's SRO (School Resource Officer) Program on June 17. MISD and MPD have this specialized program rather than the MISD having its own police force.

New member Valencia Davis gave her vocational / classification talk on June 24th. Here John Piper presents her with the elementary school library book given as an honorarium for her talk.

MeLissa Boler made a presentation to explain the work and purpose of this quasi-governmental corporation. It helps sponsor many community events that bring people to Midlothian. It is supported by a small amount of the sales tax in Midlothian. It has also contributed to several capital campaigns, like the Old Gym and our new City Hall.

Our RYLA Campers of 2025 (class of 2026 at Midlothian High and Midlothian Heritage High) returned from camp on Friday, May 30th. Don & Debbie Ellis and Tony & Jane Watson picked them up and their parents picked them up at Pinnacle Bank. We're sure they had a long sleep after this busy week, and we look forward to having them at one of our meetings soon to tell us about their experience.

Michael Bolen is the COO of Bridges Training Foundation presented our program about this worthy charitable organization, started by he and his wife, MeLissa Boler over a dozen years ago. Texas is 49th of all the states in support of people with disabilities, and these individuals and their families need help. Bridges focused on after high school because many needs are met when the disabled are children but not so after graduation. He talked about that “cliff” that happens to many disabled after high school that winds up giving them little recourse but staying in their home. So, Bridges focuses on both social development and finding meaningful  jobs (and training) for their clients.

Cecilia Wichmann talked all about "Branding" in her presentation on May 13th. Logos, colors, what your personal brand says about you. It was an educational presentation to get those of us not in marketing to understand that we are in marketing after all.

District Governor Regina Edwards visited our Rotary Club on May 13th and gave us an update on Rotary International and District 5810. She commended Midlothian Rotary for our increase of 4 members this Rotary year.  We contributed to the Book Brigade through Rotary District 5810 and to the Alzheimer's Association to honor her visit. She is shown here accepting these checks from President Don Ellis.

Truett Calvert, a funeral director at Midlothian Funeral Home introduced the program by showing a video of the project and its history, then Charlotte Waldrum gave us more details. (Laura also acknowledged Randy Hampton, Truett’s boss, here to support the presentation.)

We had a good turnout - 10 members and 9 guests. Gayla brought some turkey lasagna and a bundt cake, Cammy brought some garlic bread,  and we had a fruit and nut sweet salad. Everything was good. Wine and water were available.  It was a fun evening.
